I don't have anything to contribute here, just encouragement: I would really like to see some informed, spirited discussion of this subject. Sonicwall TZ-215 can be found for $450-$800(Newegg - pricing) PFSense comparable model $700 (PFSense store) If you compare their hardware boxes to other hardware boxes, you will notice they price similar and then compare their details and then you have apples to apples. The way you compare above makes it apples to oranges, which is it if you build it yourself.

It sounds like you have to install SNORT and SQUID after the fact too. Then you add to the cost to get the storage you need to add in the services it offers. It is $700 for their hardware base model that supports more than just a LAN and WAN. That throughput doesn't include VPN and other services. The cost of that machine, based on their recommendations would run at least $600. Did not include anti-spam cost or end point AV solution they offer. I paid around $1200 on one of my Sonicwalls with 2yrs of services. It's easy to talk yourself out of a hardware solution.

I had to do monthly updates on it Lots of time to research how it worked and how to tweak it so it was harder to by-pass(worked at a boys & girls club at the time). My appliance uses 35w, majority of re-purposed PC are older and typically use at least 95w or greater. Most people look at the fact they pulled an old system for re-purposing a reason not to include it. I'm not sure of the cost or time to virtualize all this but cost of the hardware should be considered too. It can use AD or use the built in account management. Network monitors, VOIP support, VPN, SSL VPN, security services, and other services as needed such as anti-spam (Does a decent job but didn't allow TLS using their service, which was kind of a let down there, replaced with an emails ecurity appliance for that any other reasons). Band-width management, DHCP, DNS if you want it hosted there. I have all the tools on my sonicwall that I have needed so far. Does the time it takes to setup PFSense worth the drop in box of Sonicwall? At it's base, you can plug up the different networks and go with the Sonicwall(after adding in the networks).
Decide if a UTM is right for your needs first. What does PFSense throughtput come out when adding the services that are also running on the Sonicwall? You can increase throughput by reducing services, but then you aren't' using the UTM.
So scaling works different on a UTM compared to a software application. The idea of a UTM is to consolidate certain features, so you don't need more than one device. We do plan on implementing a guest network because we are also renting out some office space for clients (think small gatherings from 20-150 people and those who host these events may need internet). The wireless / access point side to this question I kinda do favor Ubiquiti because they are reasonably priced, enterprise grade, and seems to me like the Controller aspect would definitely be easier to provision and grow with out needs. I have a paid account from OpenDNS (ideal sorda but obviously this isn't the BEST option but I had to get it due to the router we had not really having robust threat management.I have used Sophos UTM previously, worked pretty good but I preferred Untangle only because it was easier to setup.
